Connect Moonbox to other apps (MCP)

Let Claude, Codex or another app that speaks MCP use Moonbox's tools on your Mac, and what that app can and can't reach.

What it does

MCP (the Model Context Protocol) is a standard way for an AI app to use tools from another app. With it switched on, an app such as Claude or Codex can ask Moonbox to make a picture, a video, speech, a song or a sound effect, change a voice, transcribe a recording, isolate a voice or split a song into stems.

The work still happens in Moonbox, on your Mac: each request shows up in Moonbox’s activity and waits its turn with everything else. The finished file is saved in your Assets, and the other app is told where it is. Only the tools you’ve downloaded are offered.

Switch it on

  1. Open Moonbox and go to Settings › Assistant.
  2. Turn on Allow other apps to use Moonbox’s tools. It’s off until you turn it on.
  3. Choose Copy next to the connection settings Moonbox shows.
  4. In the other app, add an MCP server and paste the settings. In Claude Desktop that’s the mcpServers section of its configuration; the copied settings look like this, with the paths filled in for your Mac:
{
  "moonbox": {
    "command": "<the path Moonbox shows>",
    "args": ["-I", "<the path Moonbox shows>/mcp_server.py"]
  }
}

Moonbox has to be open while the other app uses it.

What the other app can and can’t reach

  • It can use the creative tools listed above, check on a job, and find things those tools made. It can’t read your other files, your chats with Moonbox’s assistant, your settings or your account.
  • Moonbox makes a new pairing key each time it opens, and only while the setting is on. Every request is logged.
  • Jobs that would take more than 10 minutes, such as a long video, wait until the other app confirms them.

Your words go where that app sends them. Moonbox makes the files on your Mac, but the app you connect decides what it does with your requests and the files it gets back. If it’s a cloud service, what you type there and anything it reads may leave your Mac under that service’s own terms.

Switch it off

Turn off Allow other apps to use Moonbox’s tools in Settings › Assistant. The pairing key stops working at once, and the other app’s requests are refused.
